Do you have a favorite bird?
Although I wouldn’t say they are my favorite, I’ve always found a thrill when spotting a heron. They’re so unique from other birds in the places I’ve lived.
They are not really one of the more beautiful birds. I’d describe them as striking more than lovely. And have you ever heard one? Their call sounds like the noise I imagine a pterodactyl would have made. (Check it out here and let me know if you agree!)
So herons don’t necessarily delight my eyes or my ears, but why does my breath catch whenever I see one? I see them often now, as there are several that live by the lake where I walk, and each time they bring a smile to my face.
I cannot tell you why, but when I see them, a Scripture comes to my mind. “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). Something about the way they watch the water reminds me of the way God watches over me. Their attention is focused. They are apart but very present. And when they move, you know things are happening.
These birds lift my heart to thoughts of our Creator God, my Father. They prompt me to worship Him, to trust Him through the unknown waters I’m wading in. He’s got His watchful eye on me, and He is ready to move on my behalf.
Although the herons make me think of God, I recognize the verse they bring to mind is an instruction to my heart. I’m the one who needs to be still. To keep my eyes on Him while bowing before Him in reverence and wonder because He is God. Sometimes I definitely feel like an ungainly bird with an alarming squawk. But I am His beautiful creation, and my life too is supposed to prompt others to think of Him.
There is never a wrong time to be reminded to be still and know that He is God. It’s something I could hear every day, and perhaps that’s why seeing the herons almost every day brings me joy and peace. Somehow they call me to a deeper relationship with my Father.
Have you had any unusual prompts turning your heart to Him recently?
