Do you have certain Bible verses that make you breathe a little easier when you come across them? Ones that settle your soul and bring peace from just a few short words?
I do. The other day my Bible reading took me to the first chapter of Nahum, and I thought, “Isn’t that the one with that verse…?” And it was!
Here’s the phrase that brings me great comfort: “The Lord hath His way in the whirlwind and the storm.” Nahum 1:3b
I’m not a particular fan of whirlwinds and storms, especially when they tear through my life. All the trouble can seem unnecessary and upsetting. Why do we have to go through them? That’s a question we might never be able to answer, but if we believe this verse, we know God has a great purpose that He is working out through the storms in our lives.
That’s why I can breathe a little easier. I can find rest in knowing God is working His way even through all kinds of unpleasant upheaval.
I can also look back to past storms in my life and see how He has brought good from them. This builds my faith and the ability to trust He’s doing something now, whether I can see it in this moment or not.
The song Just Be Held by Casting Crowns comes to mind when thinking about these things. “If your eyes are on the storm you’ll wonder if I love you still/But if your eyes are on the cross you’ll know I always have and I always will.” I really appreciate the message in this song, though I confess that sometimes the last thing I want to hear in the middle of a storm is that what feels like falling apart is actually things falling into place exactly as they’re supposed to be. That’s hard. I don’t like that. I don’t want storms to uproot me to move into new places, and yet. And yet. Sometimes this is how the Father has His way in us.
He is a loving Lord who does have good in mind. My good, your good, the good of His Kingdom. If we keep our eyes on Him, we’ll see all the wonderful things He will do in the whirlwind and the storm. He’s both right there with us and simultaneously greater than anything we’re facing. Let Him hold you and have His way, and when the skies clear you’ll be praising Him for all He has done.
