Know Who You Are

This year I faced some big questions. Changes were looming that I’d not had a choice in, and that is always a difficult place to find yourself. I did, however, have a choice in how I would respond.

I’m not the biggest fan of change. I like rhythms and routines and sticking to what works. Even though I know change can be good and productive, as one grows in maturity and into new seasons, it’s still not my favorite thing. It’s especially unsettling when a lot of it comes your way at once and seems to throw everything in the air.

The change this year was so big it felt like it could have unmoored many things in my life. What wouldn’t be left overturned when it was all sorted out?

I kept looking to the Lord to see what He would say and how He would work in these areas. I know God’s plans for me are good, but sometimes it takes a while of walking down challenging and difficult roads before we can see His goodness emerge. There was one thing that brought me a lot of peace, and that was the confidence in knowing I’d followed God to this point. If He’d brought me here, He wasn’t going to leave me in the shifting sands. He had a plan.

So I waited. And I prayed. Then another point of clarity came. If everything was open for change, what were the building blocks I wanted in place for this next stage of life? What were my priorities? What are the things I believe are my God-given callings? If I could hold onto those, they could be my guidestones.

Who has God called me to be? Who has He called me to minister to?

When I began to focus on those things, the pieces began falling into place. I wasn’t afraid to take steps that led me toward those answers. Suddenly, the looming changes actually took on an exciting quality, because I was embracing the things I knew were true about my life in light of God’s calling on me.

Around this time, I read a devotional about King Saul, and how one could say his failures were because he didn’t believe God’s call upon his life. He hid from his public unveiling. He was impatient. He only had partial obedience to God’s instructions. These were all because of a lack of confidence in who God made him to be.

I’m as prone to missteps as the next person, but that devotional was so encouraging to me. It showed a direct contrast to what I was attempting to do. The only sure thing I had was knowing who I am in Christ—and that was the very thing I needed!

When you know who you are, you can walk in confidence. When you trust the God who made you and called you, you know He cannot fail in equipping you for the call. This is where faith takes real form.

You don’t have to have all the answers. But if you know who you are, and Whose you are, you are going to be able to walk in that light with peace no matter what is in your way.

If you don’t know who you are, today is a great day to ask the Lord to reveal that to you. Who has He made you to be?

Wonderful post. God has called each of us to a different purpose, and sowed that purpose can be delayed. That doesn’t mean God has given up on us, but rather He has asked us to develop some patience as we wait for fulfillment of our calling.

That’s very true, because His timing is different than ours. If He asks us to wait, He does always have a purpose! We can trust Him.
